Synthetic Bridles What is available and what are they?
WEBBING
Most modern webbing is made from polypropylene, making it non stretch, non fraying and flexible. It is available in a variety of plain and combination colours, with either chrome plated or brass fittings.
Easy to clean, webbing tack is machine washable, ideally inside an old pillow case to prevent the fittings catching inside the drum of the machine. Once cleaned the tack can be hung out to dry.
Webbing is a good starting point for riders who want to make the change over from leather. Its reasonably priced is available in sizes from Shetland to Extra Full. The range includes, breastplates, bridles (some can be converted into headcollars), hackamores, martingales, reins, strirrup leather and much more.
On the downside, webbing needs to be dried thoroughly or it will smell plus plated fittings should be regularly cleaned to remove any salt build up or they can become tarnished.
ZILCO
As a development to traditional webbing materials, Zilco of Australia devised a method of sealing a webbing core with a durable plastic coating, making it robust and flexible in all temperatures and incredibly easy to maintain.
Available with brass fittings the tack comes in Cob or Full size (bridles only) and is cleaned by dunking the tack into a bucket of water and simply wiping clean with a towel or cloth.
Zilco’s sealed webbing range comes in a wide variety of plain colours, and includes several types of bridles some with removable cheek pieces allowing conversion into a head collar, Padded hunting breastplates, martingale attachments, reins, cruppers and stirrup leathers.
A slight disadvantage to this range is that it does not include running or standing martingales
BIOTHANE
Biothane tack is very similar in appearance to the Zilco sealed webbing but offers a greater choice of finishes from high gloss to matt and from solid to translucent colours.
Again in can simply be cleaned by dunking into a bucket of water and wiping clean.
Traditional biothane is hard wearing and holds its shape well and does not fade in sunlight
Recently a new form of biothane has appeared that is extremely flexible and has a matt finish designed to look like leather. BETA biothane has a softer feel and comes in solid colours only.
Biothane tack is available in sizes from Shetland to Shire or can be made to individual measurements and design. For example: biothane colours.
A choice of, standard brass or stainless steel fittings are also available.
